‘Need to make our network stronger’

Subramanyam, slated to retire in July 2012, spelt out his priorities in his forthcoming tenure. Excerpts:

As the new DGP, what will be your area(s) of priority?
To begin with, I will carry forward the works initiated by my predecessor. To deal with imminent threats from terrorism and Naxalism, we need to spur up ground level intelligence gathering – at police stations and beat level. I shall initiate a programme in that direction. We get intelligence inputs from various agencies. But beefing up our own network will certainly put us on a better pedestal.

What are your plans for modernising the force?
The government has initiated the modernisation programme in a big way. There are a few bottlenecks that we’ll try to remove and acquire more modern weaponry, gadgets and whatever is required to keep ourselves updated.

The rate of conviction in criminal cases has been abysmally low in the state. How will you overcome the problem?
There is no drawback in the investigation. In order to strengthen the criminal justice system, the competence of both investigation and prosecution needs to be enhanced. A committee is already looking into this aspect.

What will be your approach to community policing?
It is extremely important and needs to be encouraged.
