If all goes as planned, the city could get its new international airport in Navi Mumbai by 2014.
After numerous delays, the City and Industrial Development Corporation (Cidco) on Monday obtained the final approval for the revised master plan of the Navi Mumbai international airport from the steering committee headed by civil aviation secretary Nasim Zaidi.
The renewed approval was necessitated because of the changes made to the earlier plan following feedback from the ministry of environment and forests (MoEF), which cleared the proposal in November last year.
Cidco officials said they had met with a majority of the 66 conditions laid down by the MoEF.
“We will issue bids for selection of the developer in June or July. Work can begin by next year and the airport can be opened by 2014,” said TC Benjamin, principal secretary, Urban Development Department.
“Cidco had presented a phase-wise development of the airport, which got an in-principle approval by the committee,” said Tanaji Satare, acting managing director, Cidco.
As per the plan, the airport will have an H-shaped terminal building in the centre with runways on either side.
The airport will initially absorb 10 million passengers after completion of the first phase in 2014. It will be operational with one runway in the north, two taxiways, 15 contact gates, passenger building built across 86,000 sqm. It will require an investment of Rs4,424 crore. By the second phase, in 2020, both runways and four taxiways will be operational and it will be able to handle 25 million passengers.

{{/usCountry}}It will handle 60 million passengers by 2030. Overall investment in the airport is estimated at around Rs8,300 crore.
The terminal will have a built up of 3 lakh sqm across five levels and will have separate domestic and international concourse. Passengers will be able to enter from two sides — those from Mumbai will gain access from the Ulwe, and those from Pune will get entry from Panvel side.
As per the master plan, the airport will be made accessible through all major forms of transport — road, metro rail, suburban rail and hovercraft service.
Other conditions laid down by the MoEF such as the report on the drainage plan, BNHS report on flora-fauna, and the disaster management plan will be submitted by June-end.
