This year students will have more innovative courses to choose from. City colleges are spicing up their old prospectus with some new courses that are more tuned to industry and student needs.

For example, Ruia College in Matunga will be one of the first colleges to start a dual degree masters course in bioanalytics.

“The new 5-year course is designed keeping in mind industry requirements and we will help place students as well,” said principal Suhas Pednekar.

A student can opt out after three years with a bachelor’s degree in bioanalytics.

Those who don’t, can major in subjects such as bioinformatics.

For commerce students, NM College in Vile Parle is hoping to start a bachelors in financial accounting from this year.

In the final stages of university approval, the college hopes to kick in the course in July. There will be 60 seats in the first year.

“It’s a good course and we wanted to give students more options in terms of courses which is why we decided to introduce it,” said Sangeeta Kher, vice-principal of the college.

Till now, students could take three history papers and had to take three papers in another subject. However, beginning this year, they will be able to take all six History papers.

The college has also introduced the Maths option for First Year Bachelor of Arts students. This means arts students can choose to do

Maths until the second year, as one of their three subjects, if they wish.

Even for Ph.D students, new options have opened up. R.A.Podar College in Matunga offers a doctorate in banking and finance.

The Ph.D centre was opened last year, but had only one student. This year, they have already received four proposals.

“We have developed the requisite infrastructure such as a research wing in the library, access to research journals and other research material,” said Shobana Vasudevan, principal of Podar College.
