If all goes according to the plan of the solid waste management (SWM) department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), garbage would be processed using an enhanced bioremediation technology at the Kanjurmarg disposal site from May.

The bioreactor technology that would be employed to treat the waste at the 66-hectare dumping ground would ensure faster processing.

Also, a closed cell for treatment would prevent the release of toxic gases in the surroundings.

“We are adopting the bioaugmentation technique to enhance the biodegradation of waste. This would help in accommodating the increasing load of garbage generated everyday,” said Prakash Tavshe, chief engineer, SWM, BMC.

Tavshe pointed out that the method would be used for the first time in the city.

“The bioreactor technology was much needed as the dumping grounds in the city are located in the vicinity of residential areas and not along the periphery. With better technology in place, the shelf life of the ground could be increased,” said a civic engineer on condition of anonymity because he is not authorised to speak to the media.

The ground, which would soon collect 4,000 metric tonnes of waste everyday, is expected to reduce the load on the dumping grounds at Deonar and Mulund that collect 5,000 and 1,500 metric tonnes respectively.
