An octroi agent who allegedly cheated a transport company to the tune of Rs11.47 lakh by issuing fake octroi receipts was arrested by the Pant Nagar police on Wednesday.

The Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) had given the contract of transporting LPG from Uran to Mumbai to KBP Transport, Ghatkopar, which had in turn asked Vinayak Enterprises to pay the octroi duty during the transportation. KBP Transport would have reimbursed the amount later, said the police.

“Without paying the amount to the BMC, Ramesh Bhanusali, who worked for Vinayak Enterprises, issued fake octroi receipts to KBP that were later handed over to IOC,” said Ramesh Yadav, sub-inspector, Pant Nagar police station.

“Bhanusali managed to pocket Rs11.74 lakh by the time IOC received a tax-evasion notice from the civic body. As IOC questioned KBP about the non-payment of octroi duty, they got in touch with Vinayak Enterprises. They, then, realised that Bhanusali had been issuing fake receipts without paying the money,” said Yadav.
