The Thane and Trombay creeks, which were badly affected by the recent oil spill, will be cleaned up on a priority basis ahead of the Ganpati festival, the Directorate General of Shipping said on Friday.
The owners of cargo vessel MSC Chitra, which had collided with vessel MV Khalijia-III early last month, and oil spill database management agency International Tanker Owners Pollution Federation have identified the Thane and Trombay creeks for a clean-up on a priority basis, a DGS press release said. The collision had resulted in an oil spill, contaminating the surrounding areas and posing a danger to shipping traffic.
These areas (Thane and Trombay creeks) are being inspected, the DGS said, adding that a clean up of the Elephanta Island shores was also underway. Meanwhile, the regular shipping movement of vessels above the nine- metre draft in the night, in and out of the Mumbai Port Trust and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust is likely to be allowed from Saturday, the DGS said. Vessels above the 9-metres draft are already operating in and out of the two ports during the daytime, the DGS said.
Earlier, one sunk container had been retrieved from near the edge of the navigation channel , the DGS said, adding that salvagers did not find any obstruction during the survey of the entire navigation channel. Also, fishing nets from a part of the port water are being removed and a survey of these waters has also begun, the DGS said. A total of 1,092 canisters of hazardous substances have so far been recovered. Out of these, 121 canisters contained aluminium phosphide. In addition, 60 empty bottles and 91 canisters containing other pesticides were recovered, the release said.
