Chavan had said on Tuesday that the careers of the 18 students who have been accused of ragging are not ruined.

“It is not fair for the chief minister to have such a lenient view of the episode,” said Bharatiya Janata Party General Secretary Vinod Tawde.

“All this is only being said because there was no suicide involved in the case. What if a student someone had killed himself?”

Tawde said the accused should be taught a lesson. “There should be punishment not to the extent of ruining their careers but at least see that they lose a year or two so that they learn a lesson,” said Tawde.

The Shiv Sena took a cautious view. “One has to do a thorough investigation and first establish the fact that the ragging had indeed taken place,” said Sena Member of Parliament Sanjay Raut. “We need to hear what the students who have been accused of ragging have to say.”
