In an incident that reiterates how unsafe women are on city streets, a 29-year-old man, who had been arrested thrice before for stalking and molesting a 22-year-old woman, attacked her with a knife and tried to strangle her in Kurla on Wednesday evening, days after being released on bail.

The woman put up a fight and escaped with cuts on her forehead. She was walking with her friend near Ratnadeep Jewellers, close to Mirja Chawl, at 7.30 pm, when Amit Vasant Tulsankar approached her.
He grabbed her by the neck and tried to choke her. When she fought back, he pulled out a knife and threatened to kill her. Some passersby rushed to her aid, but the accused fled.
The woman has been admitted to Bhabha Hospital, where doctors said her condition is stable. Police said Tulsankar had proposed marriage to her several times, but she rejected him. He then started harassing her.
The Kurla police arrested him from near the Mithi river.
