Padmasinh gets bail in Congman murder case

Three months after his arrest in the 2006 murder of Congress leader Pawanraje Nimbalkar, suspended NCP leader and former Maharashtra Minister Padamsinh Patil was granted bail by a court near Mumbai on Friday.

Three months after he was arrested for his alleged involvement in the murders of Congress leader Pawanraje Nimbalkar and his driver, suspended Nationalist Congress Party leader Padmasinh Patil got bail.

Nimbalkar and his driver Samad Kazi were shot dead on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway on June 3, 2006. The Alibaug sessions court on Friday granted Patil bail for the personal bond of Rs 2 lakh.

On September 1, MP Patil filed a bail application on the grounds that there is no evidence against him and the chargesheet in the case has already been filed.

Patil’s lawyer VR Manohar argued that his client is entitled for the bail as the chargesheet was filed and the question of tampering with evidence does not arise.

Manohar argued that Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) does not have any evidence against Patil other than the confessional statement of a co-accused. “The confessional statement of the co-accused is not an admissible evidence,” he said.

While granting bail, the sessions court directed Patil not leave the country and also warned to not tamper with the evidence.

Nimbalkar’s son Omraje was upset with the news.

“How can a person accused of double murder get bail? I now face a serious threat to my life [from Patil].”
