J haveri Contemporary gallery in Walkeshwar is hosting an exhibition titled Considering Collage, featuring 35 works by 14 modern and contemporary artists. “Through the exhibition, we’re trying to create a new body of knowledge about the consistence of collage in Indian art,” says Priya Jhaveri, curator of the exhibition and director of art gallery, Jhaveri Contemporary.

The canvases on display bear the distinctive style of each artist and how they use collage. Bose was one of the pioneers of this style. He utilised scrap paper to create animal and human figures set against a plain background. These were carefully torn, pasted, and overlaid with drawing and commentary in Bengali.

Souza’s creations are equally eye-catching. The artist combined ink, gouache, and photography in his series of collages from 1967, when he moved to New York. He began to experiment by cutting and pasting photographs and painting his own images around them. Many of the works at this exhibition are not for sale.
