Khetu had gone to Zaveri Bazaar to buy rubber to make moulds for imitation jewellery.

“I was trying to get in touch with him on his mobile phone, but he didn’t answer. The policeman answered my call at 10pm and told us that he was in the hospital,” said Khetu’s brother Jiten.

Khetu’s left leg is fractured and he has endured shrapnel injuries on his forehead and neck.

In the same unit, Hiralal Kamat, 28, battles for survival. A cook at a hotel in Khau Galli, Hiralal moved to Mumbai from Bihar six years ago. “I hope to see him walking soon,” said Kamat’s brother Sitaram, 45.

“Both his legs were paralysed due to this injury. He has improved after spine surgery,” said Dr TP Lahane, dean, JJ Hospital.
