After helping the BJP government win its trust vote earlier this week, NCP chief Sharad Pawar sent yet another feeler to Narendra Modi on Friday, joining the Prime Minister’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan in Baramati.

While the veteran symbolically kicked off the campaign by wielding a broom, other members of the Pawar family joined him, taking to the streets of Baramati, wearing masks and carrying brooms.

The NCP chief was joined by nephew Ajit Pawar, former deputy chief minister, and daughter Supriya Sule, Lok Sabha member from Baramati.

The former Union minister cautioned that the event should not be reduced to a photo opportunity, and asked for a sustained campaign for cleanliness.

He announced that people of Baramati would offer their ‘shramdan’ for cleanliness in the town, on the first Monday of every month. Pawar urged his audience to keep the city clean to prevent diseases like dengue, which has claimed two people in the town.

Responding to the gesture, Modi praised Pawar’s initiative through social media, with a tweet that said, “Appreciable effort by Sharad Pawarji. His support to Swachh Bharat Mission will help create a Clean India.”
