Peddar Road flyover case: Public hearing on July 18

“The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has already issued a notice about the public hearing,” a senior MSRDC official said.

The MSDRDC had earlier held a public hearing in March 2008. However, the project was delayed after the environment ministry raised concerns about it.

After changing plans for the project, the MSRDC is holding the hearing after the ministry directed the agency to listen to the residents’ grievances.

The MPCB will organise the hearing.

The 4.3-km flyover, stretching from LL Marg at Haji Ali to Marine Drive near GB Pant Marg, was touted as a solution for commuters who had to travel from the suburbs to the city along Peddar Road. The project got stuck after residents, including singer Lata Mangeshkar, opposed it claiming that it would cause pollution.

But the MSRDC seems to be keen to go ahead with the project. However, it will only get off the ground after the environment ministry and the state government give a go ahead.

The residents’ inputs during the hearing will also determine the stance that the environment ministry takes in giving the project its nod.
