Water supply in Dadar, Kalachowkie and Parel will be severely affected on Wednesday. An 80-year-old Tansa main water pipeline burst on Tuesday morning on Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Road at Kalachowkie.

The pipe burst, coupled with existing 15 per cent cut across the city, will lead to a water crisis in these south central areas.

“The pipeline burst will heavily affect water supply in areas around Dadar (East), Dadar TT, Kalachowkie and Parel,” said Deputy Municipal Commissioner Pramod Charankar.

“The restoration work has begun but it will take time to repair it. Supply in these areas will be affected.” The pipeline broke open reportedly because of the flyover work being carried out by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority.

The same agency has damaged water mainlines on the same road on four occasions since work on the flyovers on this road began.

The municipal corporation has sent a bill of Rs 20 lakh to the agency. According to civic records, in the last eight months, there have been over 78 pipeline bursts in the city, resulting in loss of thousands of litres of potable water.

Moreover, because of low rainfall in the catchment areas of the six lakes that supply water to the city, the current stock is expected to last only eight months with the 15 per cent cut in place. The corporation plans to increase the water cut to 30 per cent after Diwali.
