The Samta Nagar police cracked the case of a three-year-old child’s abduction within four hours of the crime being committed. They traced Subash Vishwakarma, 50, and the child, Aryan Soni, with the help of the former’s mobile phone number acquired from his neighbours.

Vishwakarma lives in Lokmanya Chawl No 1 in Hanuman Nagar, Kandivli (East).

He is a carpenter by profession, is married and has a child. His family lives in Uttar Pradesh. The incident took place around 5.30pm on Monday.

According to the police, Sita, the grandmother lives with her family in the same locality. She had taken Aryan out to buy him some clothes. While paying for her purchases, she put the child down for a while. When she looked around for him after paying, she couldn’t find him anywhere.

Ganesh Parab, a vegetable vendor who lives in the same area, told her that he had seen Vishwakarma carrying Aryan. Both Sita and Ganesh went to his house but found it locked. She then went to the police and lodged a complaint.

Vishwakarma was produced in court on Monday and has been remanded in police custody. Police said they were trying to ascertain the motive behind the crime.

Aryan’s grandfather Chandrabhan, 48, owns a jewellery shop in Hanuman Nagar, while his father Rajesh, 28, manufactures imitation jewellery.
