“Our house-cleaning operation has begun,” joint commissioner of police, crime, Himanshu Roy said on Thursday, signalling the launch of the operation.

During the crime conference on Thursday, which was attended by officers of the rank of senior inspectors and above from all units of the Mumbai police, police commissioner Arup Patnaik issued directions to all 90 police stations in the city to update the rogues’ list in their respective jurisdictions.

“During the survey and updating exercise, those found having links with various factions of the underworld would be dealt with harshly,” Roy said, quoting the commissioner’s instructions.

To go about the crackdown, the police stations have been asked to first trace the whereabouts of old underworld operatives (currently on bail or acquitted). “If anyone’s movements are found to be suspicious, immediate action will be initiated,” Roy said adding, “by doing so, we are sending a message to the underworld to fold up as soon as possible.”

Cops seek assistance The crime branch has sought assistance from a US-based technology firm for enhancement of the CCTV video grabs obtained from corporate houses and residential societies near where Dey was shot.

Asked whether the police could establish the motive behind the murder, Roy, said, “It is not true that the police are clueless, but we have to be very careful before saying anything.”
