Police trace threat call to Masjid Bunder

The Marine Drive police have traced the threat call received by activist Nayana Kathpalia’s colleague to Madina at Masjid Bunder area. However, they are yet to ascertain that the same person was behind the attack on Nayana.

A senior officer from Marine Drive police station told Hindustan Times on Sunday that the police so far have questioned more than 100 people who could have been linked to the shooter or the plotters of the attack.

“Kathpalia has been fighting several cases and we have questioned everybody against who she had filed cases and those related to them,” said senior police inspector of the Marine Drive police station Z M Gharal.

Kathpalia’s colleague and neighbour Neera Punj, also a Citispace convenor had received a call asking her to withdraw a PIL against development of SRA buildings on reserved open spaces.

Gharal said: “We are taking the case very seriously. We have tracked down the threatening call received by Punj to Madina near MasjidBunder and would arrest the caller very soon.”

On Friday two assailants barged into Swastik building opposite Oval Maidan in Churchgate at 6.45am and fired two rounds with a country-made revolver outside Kathpalia’s first-floor residence. The 65-year-old co-convenor of the NGO Citispace, who has been fighting for open spaces in the city, escaped unhurt.

Gharal said that the sketches of the two gunmen prepared on basis of statement of Kathpalia’s domestic help would help to identify the men after we arrest the threat caller, “We will investigate if the person who called Punj is also the one after Kathpalia’s life,” said Gharal.
