A 46-year-old Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) employee died after he was run over by a private bus close to the Dahisar check naka on the Western Express Highway on Wednesday.

The bus driver, who was allegedly speeding, has been arrested for causing death due to negligence.

The victim, Rajendhra Jadhav, a resident of Kashimira, was travelling by bike to his workplace in the western suburbs.

At around 7 am, the speeding bus hit Jadhav's bike while trying to overtake him. Jadhav lost control of the vehicle and fell. The bus then ran over him, the Dahisar police said.

Jadhav sustained serious injuries to his head and limbs.

The bus driver, Raosaheb Dattatre Nalavade, 55, stopped his vehicle at the spot. Policemen posted nearby rushed Jadhav to the Bhagwati hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. His post mortem report is awaited.

"We have arrested Nalavade and booked him under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 304A for causing death due to negligence and 279 for rash driving. Investigations are on," said Ansar Pirjade, senior inspector, Dahisar police station.

According to Nalavade's preliminary medical report, he was not driving under the influence of alcohol, police said. His blood test reports are awaited.

Police said the bus has been seized to verify whether the accident was a result of human or mechanical error.
