Around 700 nurses from civic hospitals held a demonstration at Azad Maidan on Wednesday to demand promotion with retrospective effect.

The nurses had been recruited by the BMC on an ad-hoc basis in 1991-92 and were made permanent employees in 1997.
“They lost six years of their service and their seniority because of this. It is totally unfair,” said Sunil Chetnis, who heads the municipal employees’ union.
The nurses are attached to KEM, Nair, Sion and suburban hospitals. Some of them had taken casual leave to participate in the demonstration while others joined after work.
The union representatives met Mayor Shraddha Jadhav, Additional Municipal Commissioner Manisha Mhaiskar and other BMC officials. “This is a policy-level decision. We are examining the matter,” said Mhaiskar.
