Following HT’s Meter Down campaign, in which it urged the state government to enforce the already existing rule, transport commissioner VN More on Thursday issued written directives to the regional transport offices (RTO) in the city to implement this rule.

“I think it should be made mandatory that drivers display the cards prominently. And strict actions should be taken against anyone flouting the rule or carrying a fake tariff card,” said Nitin Dossa, president, Western India Automobile Association (WIAA).

YP Singh, former IPS officer-turned-lawyer, said strict action against errant drivers might deter offenders from fleecing commuters. “If an auto or taxi driver is found with a fake tariff card, the police can file a case of forgery and cheating,” he said.

According to Dossa, implementation of the rule is a must and the traffic and transport departments should join hands to ensure that the rule is implemented.

Commuters, who are already reeling under the burden of a steep tariff hike, have been complaining that drivers are using fake rate cards and fleecing them. Authorities said that drivers who fail to put up tariff cards would be fined Rs. 100 each time they are caught.
