“We have arrested five persons of whom three are minors. None of the arrested persons are from Chinai College. Those arrested have been booked for rioting,” said Shivajirao Deshmukh, senior police inspector of Andheri police station.

The degree college students who arrived for morning lectures were shocked to find names of 240 students from the commerce stream on the defaulters’ list.

Alongside the list, was a notice stating that those who did not have the mandatory 75% attendance would not be allowed to take the examination at the end of the academic year and would not be promoted to the next class.

“The management has been applying the same tactic since 2004. It blacklists a large number of students because they want them to stay away from joining their colleges. Their intention is clear. They want to shut down the institutes,” alleged Amar Singh, president of the Maharastra Junior College Teachers’ Union.

The management wanted to use the plot for a commercial venture. Despite an objection from the state government, the management obtained a stay from the Bombay high court and did not admit fresh students to Class 11 at the start of the academic session in 2010.
