Railway stations to tell their stories through paintings

The Western Railway has drawn up a plan to place murals and wall paintings to reflect the local history, art, architecture and culture at the respective stations.

The Western Railway has drawn up a plan to place murals and wall paintings to reflect the local history, art, architecture and culture at the respective stations.

Railway officials said they have invited artists and agencies to submit designs specific to each station.

In the first phase, 13 of the 28 suburban stations have been chosen for the project. They are Grant Road, Mahalaxmi, Lower Parel, Elphinstone Road, Matunga Road, Mahim, Khar Road, Vile Parle, Jogeshwari, Kandivli, Dahisar, Vasai Road and Nalasopara.

A senior official said the artwork could be a mural, painting, wall painting or any suitable medium as per the space available at each station.

In another experiment earlier this month, WR put up an illustrative display panel at Marine Lines station as part of developing it as Aadarsh (ideal) station. The panel provides information on adjoining landmarks, historical places such as Mumbadevi temple and places of tourist interest, in Marathi, Hindi and English.
