Rain causes flooding, more potholes in city

Heavy rains lashed the city as Mumbai began its weekend on Saturday. Following a two-day spell of incessant rainfall, the showers caused water-logging in low-lying areas such as Dadar East, Hindmata, Kurla, Andheri West and Sion and caused a total of 14 tree collapses in 24 hours.

Traffic on the eastern and western express highways was also affected by the water-logging and the worsening potholes on the city's roads.

Key arterial roads in Kurla, Saki Naka, Sion, Jarimari and Ghatkopar were among those worst hit by water logging and traffic snarls.

The meteorological department has predicted continued showers over the next 24 hours in the city and suburbs, with heavy rains in some areas.

Heavy rains also lashed neighbouring Thane district, causing flooding in several low-lying areas in Thane city, Bhiwandi, Kalyan, Vasai, Virar and Palghar.

Meanwhile, in what can be seen as a good omen for the city's water supply situation, all six lakes supplying water to Mumbai received moderate rainfall.

On the downside, the heavy rains worsened the condition of the city's crumbling roads, with haphazard repair work washed away, leaving craters behind once again.
