Rape accused walks free

Thirty seven days after the Vikhroli magistrate granted bail to 29 year old Mohammed Ajmeri Sheikh, accused of raping and murdering a nine year old girl in Kurla, he walked out of Arthur Road jail.

He was arrested on March 9. Last week, the police conducted narco analysis test on Ajmeri in which he claimed to be innocent.

According to the police the victim had gone missing on March 5 while police had found the body of the victim on the terrace of the police quarters opposite the Nehru Nagar police station in Kurla East on March 8.

The Vikhroli metropolitan magistrate’s court on June 7 granted him bail for surety of 10,000 as the police failed to the charge sheet in the stipulated 90 day time. The same day, the sessions court had rejected his bail application after the police told the court that there are two witnesses who had seen Ajmeri and the victim together.

“After Ajmeri's family members told Sayed that no one was coming forward to stand as surety for Ajmeri, Sayed asked his wife Farzana to stand as Ajmeri's surety,” said Ajmeri’s advocate Prakash Wagh.

On Saturday, Farzana, a resident of Kalyan at Thane district, stood as Ajmeri’s surety and he was released from Arthur Road jail, said Wagh.
