Starting this year, the Western Railway (WR) will paste stickers on the train with the rake number and the date it was last washed on. Sources said this initiative was launched a few days back for better monitoring.

The first pointer on the sticker states the rake number and the railway car shed the train was taken to for its periodical cleaning. The second pointer displays the day, month, and year when the train was last washed.

“The sticker would help those at the car sheds to make immediate note of the details on its cleaning. It will also benefit the commuters in knowing the periodicity of the washing process undergone by each train,” said a senior WR official, on condition of anonymity, as he is not authorised to speak to the media.

However, officials believe the grubby look of the trains will soon be a thing of the past as they have started cleaning the trains using the jet spraying machines.

“Presently, we clean these trains once in every 10 days,” said S Chandrayan, chief PRO, Western Railway.

Prior to the jet spraying machines that were set up in May 2010, each train was cleaned once in 40 days.

The WR has these machines at the Kandivli and Mumbai Central car sheds, ensuring cleaning of at least eight trains every day.
