Sources in government said the chief minister’s office was in the process of approaching Palshikar with a request to head the two-man probe panel that would include a retired chief secretary.

Palshikar served in the Bombay high court from 2001 to January 2007, when he retired. “I have not been approached by the government yet,”Palshikar told HT. However, he added: “I would accept the request if they want me to conduct the probe.”

The government screened several names but could not finalise two as chief minister Prithivraj Chavan has insisted that the members should not have been alloted apartments or plots under the government’s discretionary quota.
