‘Review conditions for poor mothers’

The high court rapped the state government and the municipal corporation for failing to extend the benefits of various schemes meant for pregnant and lactating mothers to homeless women on Thursday.

The high court rapped the state government and the municipal corporation for failing to extend the benefits of various schemes meant for pregnant and lactating mothers to homeless women on Thursday.

“There are many who come to the city and stay on platforms and roads. What do you do for them?” asked the division bench of Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice S.C. Dharmadhikari.

The schemes require Below Poverty Line cards and other proofs before granting of benefits. Activist Deepika D’souza moved the HC in 2009 after the death of the third child of a homeless woman. Under Janani Suraksha Yojana, Rs 600 is given to the mother for institutional delivery but the benefit is given for first two deliveries. htc
