The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the Maharastra chief secretary seeking a detailed report on compensation granted to victims of the 26/11 attacks last year.
A petition filed in the NHRC by former BJP MP, Kirit Somaiya, has alleged that the state’s relief and rehabilitation ministry is yet to send to the Centre a request for granting compensation to 79 of the 403 eligible victims or their kin.
The NHRC notice issued on November 12 has given the state government a month’s time to file its report. The commission has stated that appropriate action would be taken if the government failed to file its report in time.
On Thursday, BJP leader LK Advani criticized the Centre in Lok Sabha for its failure in disbursing compensation to the 26/11 victims.
Somaiya has alleged that the entire process of collecting compensation is highly insensitive and the victims or their families have to approach 12 different government agencies for relief and rehabilitation. Filed earlier this month, the petition has asked the NHRC to direct the government to appoint a nodal minister and a nodal secretary to act as a single window for all relief and rehabilitation work like financial compensation, medical treatment, employment, railway claims tribunal, legal advice and necessary certificates.
The 17-page long petition has also sought an enquiry into handing over of the dead body of Manohar Sahani, who died in the CST attack, to Shiviah Shiremat, who wasn’t even related or known to Sahani. It was alleged that Sahani’s body was mischievously handed over to some unknown person to get the financial compensation. “Sahani’s family could not even perform his last rites,” said Somaiya.
