Suburban consumers who feared that the cross subsidy surcharge (CSS) levied on them for changing their electricity provider would impact their monthly power bills need not worry anymore.

The Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission on Friday ruled that Tata Power customers who consume less than 500 units a month need not pay surcharge to Reliance Infrastructure (RInfra).
The regulator also assured that Mahavitaran consumers, who use the open access method — buying more than 1 MW of power from cheaper source using Mahavitaran’s distribution network — will benefit similarly.
Only high-end consumers still using the distribution networks of their previous provider will have to pay CSS from September 9. However, MERC said that even these consumers would save 29.19% on their monthly bills.
