RR Patil seeks legal opinion on Raj's case

According to sources, it is likely that the state government could also ask the police to withdraw the case against Thackeray.

"Many a times a case is filed by the police on the basis of prima facie evidence, preliminary records and feedback. However, substantiating it might not be easy. I have asked for an opinion of the law and judiciary department on the next course of action," said home minister RR Patil at Mantralaya on Wednesday.

In 2008, the police had lodged a case against Thackeray for delivering a speech against north Indians, which allegedly led to violence in the city.

Following the FIR, Thackeray had approached the HC seeking that the case be quashed as the police had not taken the mandatory sanction from the state government before initiating action against him.

Patil is likely to announce his next course of action on the Thackeray case on Thursday.
