Noel Matthew, a first-year student from St. Xavier’s College, attended a workshop in college on CPR training two years ago along with 50 other students. “The experience gives me confidence to deal with medical emergencies,” he said.
Several city schools and colleges are recognising the importance of training students in life-saving methods, especially CPR.

The workshop at St. Xavier’s was conducted by St. John’s Ambulance Association, which used videos and dummies to demonstrate techniques. “I came out wiser after attending the workshop on how to deal with medical situations,” said Mathew.
The Association has organised similar workshops in other institutes such as Saraswati English Medium School in Thane, St. Paul’s International School in Borivli and Bhavans College in Andheri.
“We plan to give basic CPR training to the members of our students’ council as students can be of help as part of the larger community,” said Sudeshna Chatterjee, principal, Jamnabai Narsee School, Juhu.
“We live in an era of lifestyle diseases such as heart attacks, and training students will help them deal with emergencies,” said Dr. Ajay Desai, director, Lifesupporters Institute of Health Sciences.
