Science students paint their thoughts

Amritansh Vats and Renu Redhu are passionate about two things starting with the alphabet P — physics and painting. So, on Monday — barely three days after their final exams — the duo was busy putting up their paintings at the Nehru Centre Art Gallery at Worli.

With no formal training to his credit, Vats, 22, has been painting for the last 18 months between his internal assessments and sometimes even on the eve of an exam. And Redhu’s obsession to paint even extends to a boring class or sleepless night.

“Through my painting, I express what I cannot while I am writing equations,” said Vats, a fourth year MSc student at the Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences (CBS), University of Mumbai.

Starting May 3, Vats and Redhu along with four of their college mates will display 30 paintings that they have created over the past two years, in a week-long exhibition organised by the Department of Atomic Energy.

For these students, pursuing pure science and art are complementary.

These five students are also part of the Art Club formed at the Centre which meets on weekends. “The exhibition is unique because these students have no formal training,” said Kishore Menon, adviser, CBS who has been providing students with canvas and other materials.
