Yash Mishra, 17, appeared for the Class 12 board exams this year, but plans to appear for the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) and other entrance exams next year. The JEE is the entry criterion to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).
With 84% in his board exams, Mishra thinks his score is good, but if possible, he would like to improve his mathematics score.
“If I can appear for a single paper I would like to appear for the maths exam, but if I have to appear for all, then I may not,” said Mishra.
Engineering aspirants who appeared for the board exams this year and would like to improve their performance next year will be allowed to do so, but they will have to appear for all the exams again, and will not be able to choose specific subjects.
A human resources development (HRD) ministry notification dated August 14 clarifies that candidates who appeared for the board exam this year will be allowed a second attempt next year.
“Everyone agreed to a second chance from next year,” said Vineet Joshi, chairperson of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). “But students will have to appear for all the exams.”
The second chance is being given in view of the fact that a student’s performance in the board exams will now play a role in determining entry to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and other engineering colleges. However, the changes were announced in July this year, after the board exams ended.

{{/usCountry}}A candidate has two attempts to take the JEE. This year 15,738 of the 76,600 candidates, or 20% of the total who appeared for the JEE from the Mumbai zone, were candidates who were taking the exam on their second attempt.
The Maharashtra state education board already allows students a second chance. A student who has appeared for exams in March can do so again in October, and vice versa. Students can choose the better performance.
The board chairperson, S Jadhav, said he was not aware of the HRD ministry notification.
