Four days after performing Mumbai's first heart transplant since 1968, on Friday doctors at Fortis Hospital, Mulund performed Mumbai’s second heart transplant. A 26-year-old man from Panvel, who was admitted to the hospital on Friday, got a second shot at life, after the family of a 62-year-old senior scientist with BARC donated his heart.
The heart was transported from MGM Hospital, Vashi to Fortis Hospital, Mulund in just 14 minutes. A green corridor was created for the safe transportation of the heart between the two hospitals. The recipient, a Panvel resident, has been working since his teenage years to support the family. However, four years ago, after contracting a viral infection, his heart muscles weakened, gradually causing his heart to fail.
When the first transplant was performed, the boy was also admitted to Fortis hospital, Mulund for “severe breathlessness”.
The recipient’s elder brother, Dilip who had lost all hopes, was filled with joy when doctors informed him a potential donor has been admitted to a Navi Mumbai Hospital. “We were in the hospital when the first heart transplant was performed. We were hoping some miracle,” said Dipil Tambe, who has quit his job to care for his brother. Doctors were also worried because his condition was deteriorating with each passing day. “He had worsened a little since admission and we were hoping he gets a heart soon,” said Dr S Narayani, medical superintendent of the hospital.
The donor was hit by twowheeler while on his way home in Chembur, which led to his “brain death”, a condition where the brain suffers an irreversible damage. He has worked with Dr APJ Abdul Kalam on a project in the past and had expressed his wish to donate his organs, said his relatives. “The patient was worsening and transplant was the only option. Though the donor was older to the recipient, we decided to go ahead with the transplant,” said Dr Anvay Mulay, heart transplant surgeon at the hospital.

{{/usCountry}}Apart from his heart, both the kidneys, liver and corneas were also donated by the family of the deceased, which were give to six people.
