More than two weeks after the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) activated the city’s first transformer inside the substation next to Mahalaxmi station, the World Bank set off the second transformer at Bandra substation.

These substations will supply 25,000 volts of electricity to trains after conversion to alternating current (AC) from 1,500 volts of direct current (DC). The Western Railway is increasing the height of the overhead wires.
The railways are currently carrying out work on conversion from 1,500-volt DC to 25,000-volt AC to enable faster movement of trains and save electricity by 30%.
“We will save at least Rs 50 lakh per annum in power after trains start running on the AC traction,” said PC Sehgal, MRVC managing director.
Moreover, the railways will be able to add more services.
By June 2011, all transformers supplying 25,000 volt of power to trains will be activated between Churchgate and Virar, turning the 60-km stretch into a deathtrap for rooftop travellers.
The old trains running on DC traction will be phased out and replaced by 127 new-age trains procured under Mumbai Urban Tranport Project Phase 1.
