Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray (84) underwent a minor eye laser treatment at JJ Hospital in Byculla on Thursday.

Thackeray, who had undergone a cataract surgery earlier, was suffering from blurred vision for the past one month.
“Due to whitening of the eye capsule, he had some visibility problem. This is common among patients who undergo cataract surgery,” said Dr T.P. Lahane, senior ophthalmologist and dean of JJ Group of Hospitals.
Thackeray reached JJ Hospital around noon and was treated with YAG (yttrium-aluminum-garnet) laser surgery. YAG laser is used to punch a hole in the iris to relieve increased pressure within the eye.
“It is a technical but brief procedure and was completed within seven to eight minutes,” said Lahane, who appreciated the fact that Thackeray chose a public hospital for his treatment. “It shows how down-to-earth he is,” said Lahane.
Thackeray was in the hospital for an hour.
“He is absolutely fit and can get back to normal routine,” added Lahane.
Padma Shri Dr Lahane is one of the most renowned ophthalmologists in the country. He has conducted more than a lakh eye surgeries and more than 3,000 cornea transplants.
