The civic body has given itself an October 30 deadline to beautify the area before Obama’s visit over November 6 and 7.

This has given a boost to the beautification of the Gateway of India; the project had been abandoned several months ago because of lack of funds. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is now scrambling to complete parts of this project — such as laying tiles near its booking office windows — along with completing the fence around the Shivaji statue and creating a lawn near it.

“The statue and the booking windows are in front of the Taj Mahal Palace and hence completing work on this stretch is priority,” said a civic official.

The BMC is in a hurry to beautify the road divider on Marine Drive as well .

Officials said that debris that have been lying for months will be removed by the weekend. From early next week, civic officials will inspect the areas.
