Gynaecologists at Sion hospital in collaboration with US-based Microcube LLC have designed a device that destroys or burns the inner lining of the uterus and minimises excessive bleeding.

Menorrhagia is caused among women in the menopausal and reproductive age group owing to hormonal changes. It can lead to anaemia resulting in high susceptibility to infections.

The device — endometrial ablation — with a diameter of three millimetre has the potential to replace the present line of treatment that requires hospitalisation. Women also undergo hormonal therapy with side effects such as painful menses, nausea and breast tenderness.

The new device works on microwave energy and the procedure can be done in 90 seconds. “The device doesn’t even need administering the patient with anaesthesia,” said Dr Chinmay Patki, co-investigator and assistant professor of the gynaecology department.

Over the past two years, Patki and Dr YS Nandanwar, principal investigator and head of the gynaecology department, developed the device and tested it on removed uteruses of 80 patients. This was followed by a real-time testing on patients’ in UK and Belgium. “The new technique will bring bleeding to the normal level and is an option to women seeking non-surgical options. It can also save them from taking the hormonal drugs,” said Nandanwar.
