Soon, learn sanskrit via your cellphone

People will soon be able to learn and understand Sanskrit with the help of their mobile phones, said Dr Gauri Mahulikar, head of Mumbai University’s Sanskrit department on Saturday while launching a Sanskrit thesaurus mobile phone application on Sanskrit day.

The English to Sanskrit thesaurus can be used on a Java- enabled mobile phone. “We have installed 750 words for now and will install more words later. The application will be open to the public in a year,” said Sunil Shivaji, head of www.Khandbahale.com, a language resource website which is designing the application.

“Sanskrit is a dying language and we hope to keep it alive with the use of technology,” said Dr Rajan Welukar, vice chancellor, university of Mumbai, while announcing the pilot phase launch of the application.

The Sanskrit department also launched a blog called www.sanskritbhavan.blogspot.com where they will display articles related to the Sanskrit language.
