The high-security technology protects vehicles from theft as it is tamperproof and irreplaceable.

The Central government, after amending the Central Motor Vehicles Rules 1989, had directed all state governments to introduce high security registration plates in 2005.

Repeated litigations delayed the process, though the Maharashtra government invited the first tender for the scheme in 2007.

The Supreme Court, in a recent hearing, turned down the state government’s proposal to introduce RFID – an advanced feature in high security registration plates. The court noted that it wanted uniformity to be maintained across the country.

At a recent review meeting held by chief secretary Jayant Kumar Banthia, the government decided to call for fresh tenders for the scheme.
