Sources said the Mumbai police have called for bids to install 2000 cameras in the city that will be under its control. The police wants private and public institutions like airports, nuclear facilities, Bombay Stock Exchange and railways to follow the mandate on the camera specifications.

Nisar Tamboli, deputy commissioner of police (detection) said this would allow the police to have easier access to footage from cameras installed at private institutions. “It will allow us to combine the footage from various sources,” he told HT.

The police has asked for several features in the surveillance system such as unidentified object detection and motion detection. The system will also have trip wires that will raise an alarm if a person tries to enter a prohibited area, or if the camera detects suspicious activity. Police also wants face recognition and number plate recognition.
