The police said the accident occurred at 1 pm opposite Pragati Society on the highway that connects Mumbai and Thane.

The victim, identified as Rakesh Shukla, lived with his family at Mohammadi compound in Kurla (W). Shukla died on way to the hospital.

Police said Shukla was driving the truck owned by Sahara roadlines. He was heading to Thane. “Shukla spotted an elderly man struggling to cross the road,” said Assistant Police Inspector Aparna Patil.

Shukla, who was with his elder brother Ashok, parked his truck on the side and hurried to help the old man. “While Shukla was returning, a speeding lorry heading to Sion ran over him,” Patil added.

“We have booked the unidentified lorry driver for rash and negligent driving. We are trying to trace the vehicle and the driver,” said the police.
