Alarmed at the rise in instances of online fraud, the state government has decided to go all out to create public awareness on the issue. The Economic Offences Wing (EOW), on Wednesday, filed an affidavit before the Bombay high court, stating that it is planning to put up ads to warn people about such schemes.

The division bench of justice DD Sinha and justice VK Tahilramani was hearing two public interest litigations filed by investors who were allegedly duped by schemes rolled out by Speak Asia and Symbiosis Trade Link.

Public prosecutor PA Pol told the court that an inquiry had been initiated into allegations by the petitioners that police initially refused to look into the complaints and was not sharing information about the investigation. The court said that the offenders must be brought to book, in the larger interest of society. “Information, which is legally permissible, must be shared by police,” justice Sinha said.

The court was informed that the first complaint in the Symbiosis matter was lodged in February 2010, but action was yet to be initiated. “What have the police done so far? Such cases should be taken to logical conclusion,” justice Sinha observed.
