State Power regulator in legal soup

The MIAL has moved the Bombay High Court against inaction by the MERC over its decision to shift to Tata Power from Reliance Infra, reports HT Correspondent.

The Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) has moved the Bombay High Court against inaction by the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) over its decision to shift to Tata Power from Reliance Infra.

The MIAL had sought changing its power supplier from Reliance Infra to Tata Power, claiming that it would help save Rs 10 lakh a day.

On Friday, the court directed the respondents — MERC, Tata Power and Reliance Infra — to file replies within two weeks. The court said that MIAL can appear before the MERC on September 30.

Sudeep Nargolkar, counsel for MIAL, argued that MERC has not taken any decision on a protocol application filed by Tata on how the meter and tower maintenance and other facilities would be managed. This needs to be decided urgently as Tata would supply the power through existing Reliance network.

The MIAL has sought that the MERC be directed to decide the application as it wants to avail power at cheaper prices.

However, Reliance later wanted MIAL to enter into a tripartite agreement with it and Tata, said MIAL’s petition.
