State to conduct new land survey after 80 years

Such a survey has not been carried out for nearly 80 years. But authorities feel it is necessary because clear land titles will solve most of the problems pertaining to the land.

Principal secretary (revenue), Swadhin Kshatriya, refused to comment when asked whether the fresh survey was inspired by the dispute over title of the plot on which the controversial Adarsh housing society stands.

Two years ago, the Centre conceived National Land Records Management Programme (NLRMP) under which it provides funds if state carries out such extensive land survey. Kshatriya said the re-survey will be a phased programme over five years. At present, the government is in the process of deciding which technology can be used. The base for the new survey will be the existing land records and settlements.

According to him, 7/12 land record is a presumptive title and the need was to provide a better, clear title to land owners. The Centre has sanctioned Rs50 crore for the survey.
