The owners of three mills in Mumbai — Bradbury mill, New Great Eastern mill and Raghuvanshi mill — will be issued legal notices asking them to hand over the remaining 3.7 hectares of land to the government, chief minister Prithviraj Chavan said on Wednesday. The land will be used to build houses for the families of unemployed mill workers.
“The owners of the three mills have not yet submitted their development plan with the land break-up to the state. According to our records, they need to hand over about 3.7 hectares of land,” said Chavan while replying to the mill workers’ housing issue raised in the legislative council on Wednesday.
“If they are not keen on developing it, they should have informed us. We have not received any response from them. So, we will send notices asking them to hand over the land to us,” he added.
Nearly 1.48 lakh families comprising 1.26 lakh mill workers and 22,701 workers’ heirs, have applied for the 6,948 ready houses. According to Chavan, the state government has acquired 9.12 hectares from 25 mills across 20 locations.
Opposition leader Vinod Tawde had raised a query on the progress of the committees formed to finalise the new rates for the houses and to scout for additional land to house all the workers. The first committee comprising ministers and mill land workers was formed to finalise the rate of ready houses, which was earlier declared as Rs8.43 lakh per house. The committee was also to decide on the cost of the 9,000 houses that are to be built on acquired land.

{{/usCountry}}The second committee has been given the task of scouting for land in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and Navi Mumbai to house the remaining 1.32 lakh families. The committee is likely to give its feedback by the end of the session.
Replying to Tawde’s query, Chavan said that the first report is in place and a decision will be announced soon.
