Around 4 lakh litres of water was lost on Thursday after a JCB broke open a 750-mm diameter pipe in Sawantwadi near Panchpakhadi.

The Thane Municipal Corporation had already declared a 24-hour water shutdown — 12 am on Thursday to 12 am on Friday — as Torrent Power was carrying out work in Temghar (Bhiwandi), where the civic water plant is situated.

“We were to lower a pipe for the Nitin subway during the 24-hour shutdown period. The JCB was removing the mud when it accidentally broke open the pipeline. Now we have to fix the broken pipeline and lower the pipe in the next 24 hours,” said city engineer KD Lala.

Several houses in Kalikaprasad Yadav chawl and the compound of Suryadarshan Tower in Sawantwadi were inundated.

“We had to wade through knee-deep water inside our houses. Our refrigerator has been damaged, books and clothes completely soaked,” said Rita Yadav (32), a resident of Kalikaprasad Yadav chawl.
