Members of the Assam Association and representatives from Manipur met the joint commissioner of police (law and order) Rajnish Seth on Wednesday to discuss issues of safety for people from the Northeast in the city.
“People from the Northeast have been feeling insecure, though the fear has now subsided. We met the joint commissioner of police and asked him to ensure protection in sensitive areas such as Kalina and Parel where a large section of the community lives,” said Deepen Rajkonwar, general secretary, Assam Association.
Members of the Association in Mumbai had sought an appointment with police commissioner Arup Patnaik but could not meet him as he had to attend a meeting at Mantralaya.
“I have informed the police to take preventive measures in areas such as Kalina and Andheri, though Navi Mumbai does not fall under our jurisdiction,” said Seth. “We have assured them that the police is always available for help,” he added.
Director General of Police Sanjeev Dayal said, “The secretary of the human rights association brought up the issue of security for Northeast students. We assured them that they have nothing to fear and they will be provided security by the police.”
