Around 257 students had applied for photocopies of their answer sheets to the Mumbai division of the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education by Friday evening.

Most have asked for recounting in physics, chemistry, biology, and mathematics and statistics. HT had reported on Friday that city students had fared poorly in these subjects, though more passed the exams compared to last year.

Five days after they receive the photocopies, students can apply for re-evaluation or rechecking of answer sheets. This can be done only after they get their original mark sheets.

“I applied for rechecking because I feel the board has goofed up in checking papers. My son’s college gave 25 to 30 marks in internal exams, but he has scored only 45 in physics,” said Atanu Mukherjee, a parent from Chembur.

Mukherjee said his son got just 53% in the combination of physics, chemistry and maths. “He will be at a disadvantage in getting into good engineering colleges, as CBSE students have higher scores,” Mukherjee added.

Confirming the trend, Laxmi-kant Pandey, Mumbai division chairperson, said, “In less than 48 hours of results being declared, we saw a surge in applications for rechecking. To meet the rush, we opened six collection windows at our office.”

He added that 29 students had applied by Thursday evening itself.

Parents are also blaming the teachers’ strike that lasted for 21 days during the exams. “I heard that during the strike, many teachers did not submit the internal marks of students,” Mukherjee said.

Pandey denied the accusations. “These are just rumours being spread by desperate parents and students,” he said.
