Sunday was the hottest day in April since 2010 as the temperature in the suburbs soared to 38 degree Celsius. Weather officials said the temperature was five degrees above normal. Officials said that at 22.8 degrees Celsius the minimum temperature was one degree below normal. South Mumbai was comparably cooler with the maximum temperature at 34.1 degree Celsius.

Officials at the India Meteorological Department (IMD) office in Colaba said hot winds blowing from Gujarat were responsible for the rise in temperature but said it was a temporary phenomenon.

"Dry and hot northwesterly winds blowing in from the Kutch region coupled with delayed setting in of sea breeze caused the rise in temperature. In April, the sea breeze usually sets in between 10.30 and 11 am. When it is delayed, the air is devoid of moisture and the daytime temperature goes up," said Dinesh Mishra, assistant meteorologist, IMD.

He said that the high pressure over the Arabian Sea keeps oscillating between east and west, determining the timing of the sea breeze.

The Met department expects the mercury to dip marginally over the next two days.
